On Thursday, August 12th, College and Career Pathways students from Northwestern High School took a fieldtrip to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Student participants were selected based on their expressed interest in the fields of engineering, biology, physics and chemistry. The students took part in an in-depth tour of the facilities and watched the various engineers at work on the James Webb Space Telescope prototype. The students learned that, in addition to engineers, physicists, and chemists, that people in other career fields like microbiology, photography, astronomy make large contributions to the success of space flight programs. The students had the rare opportunity to speak with an astronomer and gain greater insight into the various aspects of the field of astronomy.
Students also were also introduced to the unique field of OPTICAL ENGINEERING, and learned that an optical engineer designs components of optical instruments such as telescopes, microscopes, lenses and other equipment that utilizes the properties of light.
